A few disclaimers to get out on the table upfront. I’m not a medical doctor of any sort, especially NOT a Dermatologist. I have lived with psoriasis for more than 50 years. I choose not to take any prescription medications to manage my psoriasis. I very much listen to, read and take seriously recommendations and best practices from Dermatologist AND others who live with psoriasis.
The products I am recommending have not been provided to me for the purpose of review. I have paid for and use these products personally. The links to those products below are affiliate links that enable me to continue to provide this content and these recommendations.
The criteria I used to determine the best sunblock for my psoriasis prone skin – Face.
No Fragrances: as much as we may love them, fragrance is in general an irritant. Even if derived from essential oils. Different skin on the body will react to things differently. No need for the extra if it feels like burning. Smells good but feels like burning, no bueno!
Testimonials: I want to read testimonials from other consumers who are also looking for sunblock for psoriasis prone skin and / or are over 50ish. Are the reviewers my age, gender or in a similar location or trying to solve a similar problem that I too am trying to solve. Do they state success with an issue I am specifically trying to solve for. For example: ” I have a patch of plaque Psoriasis on my back…” (this is personal, and, meaningful because, I do as well.)
Accessibility: I’m not trying to lead anyone in to the jungles for an exotic toxic slug hunt or whatever. Heck I barely leave my own home. I need to know that a sunblock for psoriasis prone skin is available via Amazon and local retailers. Its convenient. If its works, i want to know I can get it again, easily. Accessible also means affordable. The other thing I have learned over the years is that you can spend as much of your money as you want to on skin care. Set a budget. I tend to be on the cheaper side of things. If I find a product that provides outstanding outcomes, well, sucks if you can’t realistically afford it. So manage that issue up front, going in to your research and you won’t get yourself in to a situation of not being able to afford the amazing outcomes your looking for. For me, I generally try to identify the “Cheap”, “Mid Range” and “High End” parts of the market. Then I generally try to identify the best quality product at the high level of the “Mid range” product offering.
Good Vibes: This is a very fluid set of things like, “I’d like to not pay for shipping water across the seas.” or “Of course it must be cruelty free” and “I’d rather not allow my consumerism to contribute to as many of the ugly things in the world as possible”. I find in general, a sunblock for Psoriasis that gets flagged by this third criteria is off the table instantly. Hence, Good Vibes.
Here are the top sunblocks for my psoriasis prone skin and what I use on my face daily:
SUPERGOOP! Play 50
This product is magic. It is formulated with advance UVA and UVB broad spectrum ingredients. It’s super light, it absorbs very quickly. It finishes off serums and moisturizers with a great level of protection.
- Clean chemical Sunscreen actives
- Dermatologist Tested
- Non irritating
- Reef Safe
- Waterproof
- No synthetic fragrance
- Vegan
- Cruelty Free
While I do use this on my face, I also use it on tattoos on my forearms. It’s a powerful spy 50 with NO white cast. Because its so light and absorbs so quickly on the face, its works amazingly for tattoo protection.
IsnTree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel
This was my first experiment with Korean skin care. It was recommended by a few Dermatologist on YouTube. I like this product very very much. The broad spectrum UV/A and UV/B technologies and the moisturizing benefits were touted as top notch. It too is very light, extremely moisturizing and “melts” in to your skin. It finishes off serums and moisturizers like a champ. The best thing about this sunblock is that if I apply directly to plaques that isn’t broken or bleeding, it moisturizes as it blocks harmful rays. It really is a great option and much more budget friendly than the above mentioned SuperGoop product.
Beware of imitators. Because foreign made sunblock is not regulated by the USFDA, there are imposters afoot. Be sure to find specifically the “ISNTree Hyaluronic Acid Watery Sun Gel”
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunscreen
Disclaimer: there is in fact a white cast from this product. However, for sports, a day in the yard or serious sun exposure, I always grab this sunblock for my mature psoriasis prone skin on face and body. It’s a Broad Spectrum SPF 55 product. From a skin care company most of us know. 80 minutes of water resistant coverage. Covers for two hours.
This is the heavy duty coverage option that does what it says it does. It’s lightweight and clean on the skin. It’s really awesome for protecting tattoos as well. The key with this product is to re-apply every two hours.
Sun Bum Mineral Spf 50 Face Stick
This is a white cast product as well. I include these as they are the absolute best when it comes to providing a wearable physical barrier between the rays of the sun and your psoriasis prone mature skin. The stick is super convenient and fits nicely in yer day bag, front pocket or any other place you can stash a flat lipstick like container.

UPF Hats
As I have mentioned in a few articles, clothing or wearables that contain UPF are not only great physical sunblocks for mature psoriasis prone skin, but, they can also be super effective when skin is cracked or irritated. Like anything, you can spend as much or as little as you like. The link I have included above is to a fairly inexpensive product line that offers lots of variety. I will say, that when I know I’m going to be out in the yard working, or outside for the day in general these hats not only do in fact block the sun, but, some are even made from the water wicking fabric that cools. Again, these are great options outside of the skin care routes.
