A few disclaimers to get out on the table upfront. I’m not a medical doctor of any sort, especially NOT a Dermatologist. I have lived with psoriasis for more than 50 years. I choose not to take any prescription medications to manage my psoriasis. I very much listen to, read and take seriously recommendations and best practices from Dermatologist AND others who live with psoriasis.
The products I am recommending have not been provided to me for the purpose of review. I have paid for and use these products personally. The links to those products below are affiliate links that enable me to continue to provide this content and these recommendations.
The criteria I used to determine the best sunblock for my psoriasis prone skin – Body.
No Fragrances: as much as we may love them, fragrance is in general an irritant. Even if derived from essential oils. Different skin on the body will react to things differently. No need for the extra if it feels like burning. Smells good but feels like burning, no bueno! I find that most sunblocks that create physical barriers for the body don’t generally come with a named fragrance but may still include a general “fragrance”. I try to avoid all of these if possible.
Testimonials: I want to read testimonials from other consumers who are also looking for sunblock for psoriasis prone skin and / or are over 50ish. Are the reviewers my age, gender or in a similar location or trying to solve a similar problem that I too am trying to solve. Do they state success with an issue I am specifically trying to solve for. For example: ” I have a patch of plaque Psoriasis on my back…” (this is personal, and, meaningful because, I do as well.)
Accessibility: I’m not trying to lead anyone in to the jungles for an exotic toxic slug hunt or whatever. Heck I barely leave my own home. I need to know that a sunblock for psoriasis prone skin is available via Amazon and local retailers. Its convenient. If its works, i want to know I can get it again, easily. Accessible also means affordable. The other thing I have learned over the years is that you can spend as much of your money as you want to on skin care. Set a budget. I tend to be on the cheaper side of things. If I find a product that provides outstanding outcomes, well, sucks if you can’t realistically afford it. So manage that issue up front, go in to your research with a budget and you won’t get yourself in a situation of not being able to afford the amazing outcomes your looking for. For me, I generally try to identify the “Cheap”, “Mid Range” and “High End” parts of the market. Then I generally try to identify the best quality product at the high level of the “Mid range” product offering.
Good Vibes: This is a very fluid set of things like, “I’d like to not pay for shipping water across the seas.” or “Of course it must be cruelty free” and “I’d rather not allow my consumerism to contribute to as many of the ugly things in the world as possible”. I find in general, a sunblock for Psoriasis that gets flagged by this third criteria is off the table instantly. Hence, Good Vibes.
Here are the top sunblocks for my psoriasis prone skin and what I use on my body daily:
I really really like and trust the SunBum family of products. I have used their products that are geared for the face, I’ve used the lotions and the sprays. In terms of convenance and effectiveness I find that this fine mist covers pretty consistently and absorbs or drys no the skin very quickly. I usually wait the advised 15 before going in the water because it is waterproof up to 2 hours. I reapply about every 90 min because im paranoid.. =). This also great for quickly covering those sun visible tattoos.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer dry-touch broad spectrum 55
This zinc / mineral based sun screen is a tried and true physical sunblock. It’s available almost everywhere online and in traditional drug stores and big box stores. It too is waterproof. Note: As this a more traditional mineral sunblock for the body, it will leave a white cast.. but is the MOST effective of the sunblocks listed here in terms of providing the physical barrier vs. the chemical barrier. It will make your tattoos look a bit washed out, FYI.
Supergoop! Play SPF 50 Everyday Lotion w/ Sunflower Extract
Supergoop! is the absolute best of the best! This is very much a splurge product. It is the most expensive in the list… and there is a reason for that. This product is the most cosmetically elegant. It offers SPF 50 PA++++, it’s water and sweat resistant. It actually moisturizes as it actively blocks the sun. While it’s at the top of my budget, when travelling it’s great to use this instead of the individual moisturizers and then the sunblock. I generally reserve this splurge for use on my face but it does a really fantastic job of absorbing in to the skin. it’s light. It’s extremely effective and it is my very favorite of those listed on this page.
